Sound and Hearing

Your ears pick up a whisper, a doorbell, and your favorite song, then turn each one into a signal your brain understands in a fraction of a second. These quizzes follow that journey from the outer ear all the way to the brain, then look at what happens when hearing does not work as it should.

How We Hear

One pair of quizzes covers the hardware. You will name the parts of the ear, from the pinna you can see to the snail-shaped cochlea hidden deep inside your skull, and follow sound as it moves through the eardrum and three tiny bones. You will also see how pitch, loudness, and having two ears help you make sense of the sounds around you.

Hearing Health

The second pair turns to hearing loss and hearing care. You will sort out the main types of hearing loss, including single-sided deafness, and learn how loud sounds damage the ear, how many decibels are too many, and what tinnitus is.

A Fact That Surprises People

The smallest bone in your body is in your ear. The stapes is only about 3 millimeters long, roughly the size of a grain of rice, yet without it sound could not reach your inner ear.

All of these quizzes are free. Pick a topic and see how well you know the one sense that keeps working even while you sleep.
