Sending a Package (part 1 of 2)

Handing over a package you actually care about, in a language you are still learning, feels risky until you know the handful of questions the clerk is going to ask. This part of the conversation gives you every one of them. By the end you can say what you are sending, where it is headed, and what is inside it, politely and without hesitating.

You work through the opening of a real exchange at the counter: the greeting, explaining your errand with Quiero enviar este paquete a Estados Unidos, describing the contents, and answering the clerk's questions about weight and packaging. The vocabulary is the kind the situation genuinely runs on, from la báscula and la caja through to the paperwork, including how to ask ¿Tengo que llenar algún formulario? before a customs form slides across the counter toward you. Those same words come back every time you mail something home from a trip, ship a gift to family, or explain what is in a box to someone who needs to know. Since the exchange uses the formal register throughout, you are also drilling the polite forms that service situations in Latin America expect from you.
