Changing Money(part 1 of 2)

Walking up to a bank counter abroad feels harder than it actually is, because the exchange itself is short and follows a pattern. By the time you finish this part you will be able to say how much you want to change, ask what the rate is today, check whether there is a charge, and hand over your documents without going quiet halfway through. It is a small skill that takes a lot of friction out of a trip.

This part covers what happens at the currency window: greeting the teller, naming an amount, asking what the service costs, and signing for your money. You will work with lines such as Quiero cambiar dólares a pesos for explaining what you need, ¿Cuál es el tipo de cambio hoy? for asking about the day's rate, and ¿Cobran alguna comisión? for finding out about extra charges. Those same phrases turn up wherever money changes hands, at an exchange counter, a hotel front desk, or a ticket window, so they keep paying you back long after you leave the bank.
