For a lot of learners the register is the nervous part, because it happens quickly and there is a small queue behind you. Work through this part and you will handle the whole payment in Spanish, right down to the polite goodbye.

Everything here revolves around money and wrapping up an errand. You practice asking for the total with ¿Cuánto es en total?, checking what the seller takes by asking ¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta?, and stating a preference: prefiero pagar en efectivo. Then come the small closing moves that make you sound like a regular, such as saying yes to el recibo, collecting su cambio, and answering the warm farewell ¡Que le vaya bien!. Every counter transaction you make, in a café, a pharmacy, or a taxi, ends with roughly this exchange, so these few lines cover an enormous amount of daily ground for the effort they take to learn.
