Here you round 12 whole numbers to the nearest ten, the simplest place value in the rounding family.

Numbers like 75 or 314 come up, and you settle each one on the closest multiple of ten.

The whole decision rests on the ones digit alone. If it is five or more you round up, and if it is less you round down, which makes this a great starting point before moving on to bigger place values.
