Check-in and Baggage (part 1 of 3)

The check-in desk is the first place on a trip where someone speaks Italian to you and waits for an answer. In this part you stand at the counter with an agent who wants your passport, your suitcase on the scale, and a decision about where you would like to sit. Run through it a few times and that opening exchange stops being the nervous part of the journey.

You will practice handing over documents, saying how much luggage you are carrying, and asking for what you want on board. The conversation covers polite requests such as Mi può mostrare il Suo passaporto?, counting bags with Quante valigie vuole imbarcare?, and asking for a window seat with un posto vicino al finestrino. These same words come back at every airline counter in Italy, and plenty of them reach further than that: the pattern behind Posso avere works just as well in a shop or a café, and numbers and times are useful anywhere. Following the conversation, listening to the native audio, and assembling sentences word by word trains you to catch the phrases quickly enough to answer without freezing.
