Order Coffee (part 1 of 2)

Standing at an Italian counter with a line behind you is not the moment to go hunting for words. By the end of this part you can step up, say what you want, find out what it costs, and pay without a pause in the middle.

This part covers the ordering half of the visit: returning the barista's greeting, naming your drink with Vorrei un cappuccino, per favore, adding something from the pastry case, and hearing the total come back at you. Then comes the language of paying, from Posso pagare con la carta? through to the receipt being handed over. These are the phrases that carry you through any Italian counter where you order first and pay after: a bakery, a gelateria, a sandwich place at the station, a stall at a market. Notice how the barista addresses the customer with Desidera rather than a blunt question about what she wants. That is the form a stranger will genuinely use with you, and hearing it here means recognizing it instantly the first time it happens for real.
