Twenty minutes on foot starts to feel long, and the sensible answer is a bus. Here you pick up the words that turn that bus from a gamble into a plan: finding the stop, getting a ticket into your hand, and knowing which one of five stops is yours before the doors close behind you.

The vocabulary covers asking where the stop is and hearing it placed next to a landmark, sorting out a ticket, and counting stops. Dov'è la fermata? opens the exchange, Quante fermate sono? tells you how long to stay on board, and Devo convalidare il biglietto? covers a step travellers often miss. Italian bus tickets are usually bought at a tabaccheria, the tobacco shop, and then stamped in a small machine once you are on the bus, which is what convalidare means. All of it transfers straight to trams and local trains anywhere in the country.
