Polygons and Shapes

What do you call a shape with seven sides, or ten? Naming polygons gets much easier once you know the pattern, and this quiz drills the shapes by their number of sides.

Naming Polygons by Their Sides

You will answer fill-in-the-blank and true or false questions, with prompts like naming the polygon that has 7 sides or identifying the shape with 10. The quiz moves through the common polygons like the triangle and square and a few you meet less often, such as the heptagon, so the whole family of shapes starts to feel familiar. You will count sides on figures from the triangle up through ten-sided shapes and a little beyond.

These questions run from beginner to intermediate. Alongside the names, you will sort out what makes a polygon regular, with equal sides and angles, versus the more complex or irregular shapes, so you can classify a shape correctly rather than just count its sides.

Did You Know?

Most polygon names come straight from Greek number prefixes, which makes them far easier to remember. Penta means five, so a pentagon has five sides, hexa means six for a hexagon, and the pattern keeps building from there.

Once you know the prefixes, new shapes almost name themselves. A seven-sided shape is a heptagon and a ten-sided one is a decagon, so you can often work out a name you were never directly taught.

How the Quiz Works

The quiz is short, about five minutes, and you can repeat it whenever you want the names to stick. Learning the prefixes once pays off across the whole of geometry, since the same roots turn up in everyday words from hexagonal tiles to five-sided buildings. It is a small set of patterns that unlocks a surprisingly large group of shapes. Ready to name every shape? Open the free interactive math quizzes and start here.
