Being served is only half of a cafe visit in France. The rest is claiming a seat, getting online, and following the short exchanges that come with your order, and that is what this second part puts within reach.

The conversation moves from the counter to a free table by the window. You ask permission to sit with Je peux m'asseoir là ?, find out whether the wifi costs anything, and ask for the code with Quel est le mot de passe ?. The waiter points you to your ticket de caisse, which is the till receipt rather than any kind of ticket, and that is where French cafes usually print it. You also practice turning down a second round politely with c'est tout and recognizing what staff say as they set your order down. Anywhere you sit and stay a while, a cafe, a bar, a bakery with a couple of tables, this is the vocabulary that turns a quick purchase into a comfortable hour.
