Forty minutes on foot, or a short ride on the number twelve. Choosing the bus is easy, but it comes with its own set of questions, and this is where you learn to ask them.

Here the conversation moves to the bus stop itself, covering the line number, the ticket machine, the price and the moment of getting off. You practice Où est-ce que je peux acheter un ticket ?, a question shape that turns up everywhere in spoken French, along with Combien coûte un ticket ? and Où est-ce que je descends ? when you need to know which stop is yours. One phrase worth knowing before you hear it: valider votre ticket means stamping it in the little machine once you are on board, a step that is easy to forget and expected of you. This is everyday transport language, useful on a city bus, at a tram stop or anywhere you have a ticket in your hand and no idea which stop comes next. Counting stops in French suddenly becomes a practical skill rather than a classroom exercise.
